With their head office located in an old mill from the industrial revolution on a 26 acre site, Renishaw plc is a leading provider of metrology probing solutions to industries around the world.

The touch-trigger probe was invented in 1972 by Chairman and Chief Executive Sir David McMurtry to solve a specific inspection requirement of measuring complex pipe runs for the Olympus engines used on Concorde. The early product focus for the first Renishaw company established in 1973 by David and John Deer, now Deputy Chairman, was on the manufacturing processes, initially using probing systems for the post-process inspection of finished components on CMMs (Coordinate Measuring Machines). A range of probes was then developed for component inspection on CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) machine tools, as well as for tool setting and job set-up, which led the way to automated manufacturing.

Today, Renishaw stands at the forefront of automated metrology, the Group's products enabling measurements to be taken to international standards. The company's expertise has expanded to cover the fields of calibration, motion control and materials analysis. Its markets are global and cover a diverse range of sectors. Market niches have been identified in the metrology requirements and applications in the fields of bio-medical and dental research. Renishaw fundamentally believes that success comes from patented and innovative products and processes, high quality manufacturing and the ability to provide local customer support in all its markets. The Group's products ensure that exacting specifications are met with cost effective methods and perform measurement to international standards.
