Hi-Tech Metrology is a highly successful family run Australian business supplying 3D scanning and metrology systems to a broad range of industries throughout Australia and New Zealand.

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Calibration Lab Technician – Trainee, with a focus on portable coordinate measuring machine (CMM) arm calibration. In this entry-level role, you will receive hands-on training in the calibration, inspection, and maintenance of articulated portable arms and 3D scanning equipment used in industrial measurement applications. This is an excellent opportunity to launch your career in metrology and precision measurement.

You will become an integral member of our operations team whose duties will include:

  • Calibrate and verify the accuracy of portable CMM arms and laser scanners from Hexagon
  • Verify the accuracy of hand-held scanners from Creaform, and portable CMM arms from Faro
  • Perform precision measurements using certified artifacts (e.g., ball bars, step gauges, length standards) to validate system accuracy
  • Maintain calibration logs, traceability, and documentation in accordance with ISO 9001
  • Conduct incoming inspections and diagnostic evaluations on equipment to determine service or repair needs
  • Operate metrology software platforms (e.g., PolyWorks, PC-DMIS, Spatial Analyser, Creaform) for alignment, probing, and scanning verification tasks
  • Ensure proper environmental conditions and artifact care to support accurate calibration
  • Communicate findings, non-conformances, and recommendations clearly to QA and clients
  • Assist in process improvements and quality system audits related to calibration and measurement systems
  • Provide technical support to customers and field service teams regarding best practices in arm calibration and use

Successful candidates will possess:

  • Experience in a similar role
  • High school VCE or equivalent
  • Diploma in Metrology, Mechanical Technology, Engineering Technology, or related field is a plus
  • 2+ years of experience in operation of portable CMM arms
  • Experience in a metrology or dimensional inspection environment, preferably with 3D scanning and reverse engineering applications
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; exposure to CAD or 3D modelling software is a bonus
  • Innate care for quality work and attention to detail
  • Ability to follow instructions carefully
  • Strong customer focus
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to lift and handle equipment up to 20 kgs
  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods
  • Visual acuity for precision tasks

Preferred but not required:

  • Familiarity with Hexagon or other CMM systems
  • Exposure to ISO 17025, ISO 10360, or ASME metrology standards
  • No prior calibration experience required
